Exploring The Bible
Romans 5 (NIV)
"Holding On To Real Faith"
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have[a] peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

- No longer is this peace subjective (an opinion of belief) This peace is objective (a fact that is justified by our faith through JESUS CHRIST!)

2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

- The password to gain access to GOD is JESUS! We only have to enter the password once and we don’t have to change it every 90 days!

3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance;

- By holding on to our faith in JESUS, we know that suffering produces perseverance.

- The actual strengthening of the muscle comes after stressing the muscle with weights or extenuating exercises!

4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope.

- As our faith in JESUS gets stronger, our character is built (developed) to be more CHRIST-like, and the more we become Christ-like the more we have faith in the substance of things hoped for!

5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

- In hope we receive the evidence of things not seen! And we are never disappointed when GOD pours HIS love on us

6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

- In due time. The right time! Not our time (please make the suffering stop!) but in the right time, which is that time when you are completely powerless CHRIST stepped in!

7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.

- Even if I was all righteous, then it should have only been a righteous man die for me . . . but I still would not be saved.

- If I was just a really good man, then it should have only been a good man that died for me . . . again . . . I still would not be saved

8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us

- But GOD! Demonstrated HIS own love for us!

- Not the priest . . . not the pastor . . . not the righteous man or the good man . . . but HE demonstrated HIS very own love for us!

9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

- If we are now covered in HIS blood by the justification of our faith, how much more have we been saved from GOD’s wrath . . . for the wages of sin is death!

10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

- GOD didn’t wait until we said “I Love You Lord” then offer HIS Son as a ransom for our sins. . . but when we were enemies, HE died for us.

- We have always been sinners . . . so I get that part, but for an enemy! JESUS provided reconciliation even for HIS enemies! All we have to do is confess and believe . . . and we shall be reconciled

12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.

- Adam made the opened the sin account (like a credit card account), we have been racking up the bill and JESUS paid the price!

- Before the law we were really charging up the sin account which was opened in Adams name, but all has been paid in the name of JESUS

15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. 16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. 17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)

- Adam was the first to sin, and not only did our forefathers inherit his bill, but they start racking up even more debt, which we inherited and started adding our own debts! But it only took the right One to inherit the entire debt for all of our sins and pay them off . . . at one time! JESUS doesn’t have to die every three years for our sins. HE died once for our past, present and future sins!

18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

- The bookends! Adams disobedience opened the account, we continued to charge up the account so GOD had to give us the law to make us aware of our sins and through JESUS’ obedience all of our accounts have been closed and paid in full without HIM going bankrupt

20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

- Knowing better makes awareness of sin increase, but knowing the grace of GOD should increase our faith in CHRIST JESUS! Just as sin reigned in death, grace now reigns in righteousness.
